Theatre Tribe began simply with an idea of bringing a theatre sensibility to film and a cinematic perspective to the stage.

In hopes of building a community of actors, writers, directors, producers and designers all focused on bridging these two mediums, Stuart Rogers founded Theatre Tribe in 1999. The first productions were experimental private shows, but after a relatively short period of time, the Tribe began to find their rhythm and produced successful plays at the CBS Studio Center and The Jewel Box Theatre.

The fledgling company grew exponentially, and in 2002 settled into its current home in the 38-seat theatre next door to the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. Theatre Tribe was now dedicated to producing vital new works that moved audiences with the same visual power and velocity as film.

All performances are now World Premieres, West Coast Premieres or Los Angeles Premieres. Tribe has since mounted nine successful Main Stage productions in its current space; five receiving Critics Choice in the LA Times, including works by such well-respected authors as Lanford Wilson, Paula Vogel and Craig Wright. Theatre Tribe has won Awards from Los Angeles Drama Critic’s Circle, LA Stage Alliance and BackStage West, to name a few. New material is often staged on Sundays as part of their Sunday Brunch Series. Submissions are always accepted and new writers are encouraged to submit.

Though Theatre Tribe is now solely focused on theatre, their initial mission is collaboratively fulfilled by their sister company: The Film Wing.
